LME Base Metal Prices Update

LME base metal prices rebound slightly last Friday -
LME base metals prices all rebounded slightly last Friday as investors enter the market, except for tin price.

Tin price dropped by 3.3 percent to US$13,000/ton, and had decreased by 38 percent since June. Copper price increased by 3 percent to US$4,810/ton. Lead price saw an increase of US$80/ton due to the stock reduce.

Nickel price raised by US$20/ton to US$10,800/ton and zinc price raised by US$50/ton to US$1230/ton. Aluminum price increased to US$2,205/ton, up by US$20/ton.

LME nickel price hit low -
Last Friday, LME nickel price plunged to US$10,585/ton.

Since October 7, the nickel price has sharply plunged by US$1,250/ton and continues to show a downward trend, hitting the lowest price within the last two years.

Steel traders may observe nickel price dropping down to US$10,000/ton this week. Some steel traders are even expecting the price to bottom out, after which they can look forward to a fresh new rebound, leading to better dealings in the stainless steel market.

US Scrap Steel Prices Down in October

US H1 scrap prices drop
On October 13, the average price of H1 scrap in Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Philadelphia was US$189.17/long ton, down by US$61.66/long ton from last week. The price of No.2 bundle scrap was at US$139.50/long ton, down by US$105/long ton from last week.

Among them, the average price of H1 scrap in Pittsburgh was US$194.50/long ton, decreased by US$105/long ton; in Chicago was US$169.50/long ton, down by US$40/long ton from last week; in Philadelphia was 203.50/long ton, decreased by US$40/long ton than the previous week.

In east coast, the average price of H1 scrap in New York, Boston, and Huston was US$162.83/long ton, decreased by US$30/long ton than the last week

Nucor Decreases Rebar Prices

Nucor to decrease rebar prices - Nucor has announced to cut rebar price by US$130/short ton for those shipments from October 13.

In the official notice on October 10, Nucor indicated the price cut is contributed to the downturn of the raw material surcharge for scrap metal.

Nucor had brought down the rebar price by US$30/ton on August 13 and US$70/ton on September 10 separately.

Base Metal Prices Recap and Outlook Oct 14 2008

Base metals remained buoyant. Copper rebounded on the back of global effort to recapitalize banks triggered a broad recovery in financial markets. The recovery came as the U.S. plans to inject $250 billion into its banks, following a concerted European drive to do the same, boosted stock markets. In another development, China’s imports of unwrought copper and semi-finished copper products rose by 20 percent in the month of September as merchants increased spot imports on attractive margins. LME aluminium rose as high as $2,319 a tonne, from $2,255 a tonne, as financial turmoil delayed a $10.6 billion aluminium joint venture between Rio Tinto and Saudi Arabian Mining Co. Alumina refineries in China are shutting down some high-cost capacity as prices fall, refinery sources said on Monday. LME copper touched $5500 a tonne whereas lead climbed to $1645 and zinc made a high of $1520 a tonne.

Copper prices could face resistance above $5,500 levels as the current revival in prices could be short-lived, i.e. depend on the US Dollar movement. Aluminum prices are expected to trade above $2,200 as prices are as it is below their marginal cost of production. Zinc, Lead and Nickel prices could trade above their lows that they touched earlier as the metals are also trading below their marginal cost of production. Yesterday dollar weakness helped prices to revive from their multi-year lows. Since the macroeconomic picture remains bleak we cannot ignore technical sell-offs and corrections at higher levels and prices will remain susceptible to volatility.

U.S. Scrap Steel HMS Prices Plunge in October

American scrap has been suffering from a serious price plunge since September because of lower demand in both domestic and global markets; the price will drop again during October but buyers are still waiting to see what the future trends will be.

At present, the angle scrap price is US$320~330/ton in the eastern gulf, the fragment scarp price is US$245~255/ton, and the H1 scrap price is US$210~220/ton. Due to the uncertain financial situation, nowadays most steel enterprises have ceased their purchases.

America mainly sells scarp to Turkey but the export volume has been successively reduced because Turkey has just finished Ramadan (a month of fasting) and due to weak domestic market demand; however, American scrap suppliers are still optimistic, they would be glad to offer CFR US$300/ton (Turkish port), which is US$110/ton lower than last month, if buyers would like to purchase.
