LOCATION Kos is located to the southeast aegea sea and belongs to the complex of Dodecanese islands. At the north there is Kalimnos island, Pserimos island and the small islands Tsatalia. At the western direction we can see Astypalea island. Eastern we can see the Ceramicos gulf of the Turkish coast and southern the islands Nissiros and Giali. The Island of Kos has an area of 290.29 square kilometers. The coastal line has a length of 122.2 kilometers and the majority of those are accessible and suitable for swimming since they consist of sand and shingle. The village of Kefalos is situated in the southwestern part of the island in a distance of 20 kilometers from the airport. Generally Kefalos village has to offer stunning natural beauty, plenty of fresh water springs, flora and fauna of major scientific interest and important archaeological sites. Built in a traditional characteristic architecture that attracts more and more visitors every year. |

CLIMATE The climate of Kos since the ancient times has been mild and one of the best in the Mediteranean Sea. The winter is not very cold and the summer is not very hot. The temperature during the winter rarely falls under minus zero degrees Celsius. During the summertime due to the northeastern winds, it rarely rises over thirty six degrees Celsius. Generally the average annual temperature is about nineteen degrees Celsius. The colder month is February and the hotter month is July. The sunshine is frequent and in fact very rarely we will find days in the wintertime with no sunshine at all. With mild spring season and a pleasant autumn the Island provides sea swimming and sunbathing facilities for the season March to October. This is one of the reasons why it is one of the most favorite Mediterranean holiday destinations. In the southwestern part of the island, from the village of Antimachia (airport) to the village of Kefalos the climate is particularly dry. This fact makes the climate of village ‘Kefalos’ on of the healthiest climates in southern Europe. |

GEOLOGY The entire area of the island of Kos can be divided in two separate parts. The Northeastern part which consists of flat fertile grounds and the southeastern part consist of rocky hills with only exceptions the small valleys of Kardamena and Kefalos. Generally the there is a vast variety of different rock materials on the island’s surface. It seems that the ancient core of the island, which is the northeastern outcrop, has the same geological formation with the coast line of Turkey (Ceramicos gulf), which means that the two sides where connected and separated after a series of earthquakes and ground settlements. The majority of the Island surface and especially the western part consists of volcanic material, while scattered in several areas we can find late argilomargaic and limestone rock material. The seabed around the island is sandy and has medium depth, which lies between 20 and 50 meters in a distance of half a mile from the coastline. |
