Acoustic Guitars

Acoustic guitars come in many different variations of construction and materials. More expensive guitars feature solid tonewood tops that are often made of spruce, sides and backs that are often rosewood, maple, or mahogany. Lower-priced guitars can combine solid tops with laminated backs and/or sides. Entry-level or beginner guitars are usually made entirely of laminated tonewood. Necks are generally made of mahogany, and fingerboards are usually made of dense tropical hardwoods such as rosewood or ebony. The various combinations of the different woods and their quality, along with design and construction elements (for example, how the top is braced) are among the factors affecting the tone of the guitar. Many players and builders feel a well made guitar's tone improves with age.

Electric guitars are used extensively in many popular styles of music, including almost all genres of rock and roll, country music, pop music, jazz, blues, and even contemporary classical music. Its distinctive sound and intimate association with many legendary internationally-famous musicians has made it the signature instrument of late twentieth-century music. This distinction has important consequences on claims of priority in the history of the electric guitar.

Bass Guitars

Electric bass guitars are also called electric bass or bass guitars. They are electrically-amplified fingered (or plucked) string instruments. The bass is similar in appearance to an electric guitar, but with a larger body, a longer neck and scale length, and, usually, four strings tuned an octave lower in pitch, thus resultin in the bass range.

Since the 1950s, the electric bass has largely replaced the double bass in popular music. The bass is typically used to provide the low-pitched bassline(s) and bass runs in popular music such as jazz. The electric bass is also used as a soloing instrument in jazz, fusion, Latin, and funk music styles.

Guitar amplifiers come in two main forms. The combination or combo amplifier contains the amplifier head and guitar speakers in a single unit. The amplifier head or amp head contains the electronic circuitry constituting the preamp, built-in effects processing, and power amp. In the other form, the amp head is separate from the speakers but joined to them by cables. The separate amplifier is called an amplifier head, and is commonly placed on top of one or more speaker cabinets. A separate amplifier head placed atop a guitar speaker enclosure or guitar speaker cabinet forms an amplifier stack or amp stack.
