For the average consumer, a device that could play both HD DVDs and Blu-ray discs, would take much of the risk out of adopting the new video formats, and would more than likely lead to a more rapid take up of the new technology - but it appears that one may not arrive for a long time. Legal agreements, intellectual property issues and pride will more than likely keep the main rivals from coming together in the near future, which can only be a disappointment for those of us keen to make the most of the new technology. Until everyone agrees that having a unified format is good for the consumer and ultimately better for the industry, there is not much hope for a universal product.
